Dear Parents and Athletes,
We would like to take a moment to provide some helpful information on a common injury seen in our youth soccer programs.
Understanding these injuries and knowing how to manage them can help ensure your child stays safe, recovers properly, and continues enjoying the game they love.
Ankle Sprains in Soccer: What Every Parent Should Know
At DR Fit Physiotherapy, we see ankle sprains every single season — they’re one of the most common injuries in soccer, especially in young players.
We want to make sure you know what to do if it happens, how to reduce the risk, and how to support your child’s recovery so they don’t miss more game time than they have to!
What Is an Ankle Sprain?
An ankle sprain happens when the ligaments (which hold the ankle together) are overstretched or torn — usually from rolling the ankle while running, jumping, or landing awkwardly.
Signs of a Sprain:
- Sudden pain on the outside of the ankle
- Swelling and bruising
- Difficulty walking or putting weight on the foot
- Feeling like the ankle is “weak” or unstable
What to Do:
- R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) in the first 48 hours
- Avoid pushing through the pain — it can make things worse
- Don’t rush back into sport — that’s when repeat injuries happen
How Physio Helps:
- Reduce pain and swelling quickly
- Rebuild ankle strength and balance
- Prevent recurring sprains (which are super common in kids who don’t rehab properly)
Guide a safe return to sport — no guessing needed!
We strongly recommend a physio consult for any sprain that causes limping, swelling, or missed training. Getting on top of it early can prevent a minor sprain from becoming a chronic issue!
